There were a few things I wanted the students to take away from this lesson.
(1) I wanted the students to learn several verbs: 打, 踢, 跑, 跳. They are da3, (to hit, or to play), ti1 (to kick), pao3 (to run), and tiao4 (to jump). They were used in combination with the various sports, especially sports using balls.
(2) I wanted the students to compare the similarities between the names of the sports between Chinese and English. (for example, many words use the word "ball" in them)
(3) Use their critical thinking to figure out the meaning of certain words, based on context clues. (one of my students figured out that the word 球 (qiu2) means ball, based on the pictures and the words. They also figured out 高 (gao1) meant high (when given a photo of someone doing the high jump), and 遠(yuan3) meant long, or far, when looking at a photo of a long jumper.
I put together the Olympic Sports PowerPoint file below, and I was really pleased at how excited my students got in this lesson! Lots of colors and a subject they really connected with all helped to make this a really great lesson!
